Business Mastery at Work
Build a business that holds together, even when you step away.
I help established New Zealand SME owners build better systems, strengthen their team and take pressure off themselves.
Practical coaching, consulting and hands-on management support for construction, infrastructure and essential-service businesses.
20+ years of leadership and operational experience across construction, professional services, education and the public sector.
MBA-qualified, former General Manager and five-year Chair of the Irish Business Network of New Zealand.
Does this sound familiar?
You are still pulled into too many decisions. Your team is busy, but roles and priorities are not always clear. Systems have grown over time without properly joining up. When something goes wrong, it comes back to you.
You do not need another report to sit on a shelf. You need help identifying what is getting in the way, deciding what matters and putting practical fixes in place with your team.
The result is clearer accountability, connected systems and a business that depends less on you.
Four ways I can help
Consulting
Fix a business problem properly.
Hands-on support to improve operations, systems, technology, HR or health and safety. We identify the issue, build the solution and put it into use with your team.
Fractional GM
Senior operational leadership without a full-time hire.
I step in part-time to lead operations, strengthen managers and build a business that runs reliably, then hand it back in better shape.
Coaching
Better decisions and stronger leadership.
Regular one-to-one sessions to help you work through challenges, lead with confidence and stop second-guessing important decisions.
Advisory
Experienced support for the calls that matter.
Ongoing access to practical advice when you need a second opinion, an outside view or a clear steer.
Not sure where to start?
Book a short conversation. We’ll discuss what is getting in the way, whether I am the right person to help and the most sensible next step.
How I work: the Blueprint
Most businesses don't have a strategy problem. They have a follow-through problem. I work through five layers, top to bottom, so the plan actually holds.
01
Strategy
Where you're heading.
02
Policies
The guardrails.
03
Processes
Same results every time.
04
Standard Operating Procedures
Simple how-to’s.
05
Systems
Tools that automate and carry the workload.
I work inside the business, not from the sidelines. You're left with a business that runs on more than what's in your head.
A practical result: 5-star safety systems and access to major contracts
AirVac Trax, an Auckland civil contractor, needed stronger systems to meet the standards required for larger infrastructure work.
"Brian helped us reach a 5-star health and safety rating by joining up our systems and coaching us to think differently. It opened access to large contracts and gave us real confidence tendering for major projects."

Owner, AirVac Trax
Meet Brian
I’m Brian Walsh, an MBA-qualified business consultant and former General Manager with more than 20 years of leadership and operational experience.
I help Auckland SME owners turn complex business problems into clear, practical action. BMW Consultancy is deliberately hands-on. When you work with me, you work directly with me, not a junior consultant or a standard template.
MY WHY
The businesses that thrive aren't the smartest or best-resourced. They build systems that work and trust their people to run them.
HOW I WORK
Plainly, practically, with a bit of humour. No jargon, no theatre, no theory for its own sake.
WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT
I turn tangled problems into clear, practical steps, then build the trust to actually get them done.
Leadership in action
In 2025, Brian completed a five-year term as Chair of the Irish Business Network of New Zealand, seeing the organisation through a change in leadership and staying on to support his successor through the transition.
"I worked with Brian on the board of the Irish Business Network NZ (IBNNZ), first as a committee member under his chairmanship, then through the transition once I became chair.
He was always there, not only to diagnose issues but to come up with pragmatic, well-thought-through solutions.
He also made sure a proper succession plan was in place and stayed on to support me through the handover, a rare quality in a chair.
As a network, we try to build community, and Brian has consistently connected people and stepped in directly to make things happen."

Questions owners ask me
-
I typically work with ambitious owners and leadership teams of established New Zealand SMEs, roughly 5 to 20 staff and $3m to $10m turnover, across construction, trades, professional services, technology, education and not-for-profits.
-
Consulting is me helping fix a specific problem. Coaching is me helping you become the leader who fixes them. Consulting builds the system; coaching builds the person running it. Most owners use a mix of both.
-
It depends on days per month and scope, but it costs a fraction of a full-time GM salary. You get senior operations leadership without a permanent executive on the books. After a short call I'll give you a clear figure based on what the business actually needs.
-
Usually within a couple of weeks. We start with a 15-minute call to check I'm the right fit, then a short assessment of where the business actually is.
